Houston Filipino Artist, Mariel Agbayani Bathan, was born in Chicago, Illinois. Bathan and her family moved to Missouri City,TX in the late 70’s where she attended Fort Bend County schools. After graduating from Texas State University with a Bachelors of Fine Art, Bathan moved to San Antonio, creating fabric sculptures and mixed media pieces. Bathan moved back to Houston in 2014 and lives in East Downtown with her husband, Rich.
I use many different mediums, such as hemp,abaca, acrylics, and found objects. I believe that working in a single medium is restrictive to my artistic process. Each idea manifests in its own individual style.
“I find it intriguing to combine vibrant colors, found objects, and text and have them serve as a reminder that interest, beauty and amusement can be found in everyday objects”, said Bathan.
